Best Betting Sites in Africa: International Betting Sites and Local Bookmakers, Country by Country

The best betting sites change shape at every border. A bookmaker that prints a GRA licence number in Nairobi runs on a Curaçao permit in Lusaka, pays in rand in Johannesburg and takes Orange Money in Douala.

The rankings below start from the country you bet in, because the licence register, the wallet on your phone and the tax on a winning slip all come from local law.

Kenya charges 5% excise on each deposit, Uganda withholds 15% of net winnings, Ghana stopped taxing winnings in April 2025, and Zimbabwe now keeps 25%.

Best betting sites across Africa, ranked: map of the African betting markets covered

The best betting sites in Africa on this board publish a welcome offer in the local currency, name a licence and list a cashier route punters in that country can use.

Each row carries a small map of the markets a brand serves. Countries where it holds a local licence are woven in that country's own cloth, the rest are shaded plain.

1xBet's map shows Kenya, Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania and Cameroon in cloth and sits on the Lagos register, while a crypto book such as Stake shades every market plain.

Filter by country and the list shrinks to the sites that take players there. The country page then adds the exact licence number, the rollover and the payout after tax.

Order matters less than fit. Melbet pays the largest kwacha match in Malawi at 200% up to MK980,000, yet in Kenya the same brand clears its bonus at 8x on accumulators priced 2.10 or higher. That is a heavier road than 22Bet's 5x at 1.40, so pick the country first and read the rollover line in its table.

Top betting sites by country, from Kenya to Cameroon

Top betting sites in each market are ranked on their own page with the regulator's register, the local wallets and the tax rule that applies to your ticket. Kenya and Tanzania share M-Pesa but not the tax: Nairobi charges 5% excise on deposits and 5% on payouts, Dar es Salaam takes 15% of net winnings.

Nigeria is regulated state by state since the Supreme Court judgment of 22 November 2024, so a Lagos LSLGA licence is the number to look for.

Ethiopia is missing on purpose. The Ethiopian Lottery Service revoked every sports betting licence after a December 2025 suspension, and the ban was still in force in October 2026 according to Sumsub's report on the audit. No bookmaker is ranked there.

Best bookmakers for the way you bet

Best bookmakers for the way you bet: Zambia on a map of Africa with licence, payment and tax notes

The best bookmakers for accumulator punters keep the rollover at 5x on three-leg slips priced 1.40, which is the 22Bet, BetWinner and Paripesa standard from Kenya to Cameroon. Melbet asks for 8x at 2.10 in Kenya, Zambia, Tanzania and Malawi, so a KSh 10,000 bonus needs KSh 80,000 of qualifying stakes at odds that lose more often.

1xBet splits its bonus in half, 5x on accumulators and 30x in 1xGames, which suits a punter who mixes football with casino rounds.

Small first deposits

Paripesa opens its Ghana offer from GH₵8 and its Zambia offer from K20. 22Bet starts at GH₵12 in Ghana and KSh 150 in Kenya. In Cameroon the MINAT-licensed trio of 1xBet, Melbet and BetWinner all start at 600 FCFA.

Local licence in hand

1xBet prints a local number in Kenya (BK 0001232), Ghana (GCSB26F1615T), Uganda (NLGRB-BM-26-0206), Tanzania (SBI000000029) and Cameroon (000020/A/MINAT/SG/DAP/SDLP/SJ), and sits on the Lagos LSLGA register. 22Bet matches that list except Cameroon.

Crypto balances

Stake, Cloudbet, BetFury, Gamdom and BitStarz run balances in USDT, Bitcoin or Ethereum. Cloudbet quotes payouts within 24 hours and BitStarz an average of 10 minutes. They sit at the foot of every country list because no African regulator licenses them.

Free bets in place of a match

Mozzartbet in Kenya returns 50% of a first deposit as a free bet up to KSh 2,500 once the deposit is played on four-leg tickets at 1.70. Between 10 and 50 Aviator free bets worth KSh 10 each follow within 48 hours.

Who licenses betting companies in Africa

Who licenses betting companies in Africa: payout slip for a Zimbabwe bet showing stake, odds and tax

Betting companies in Africa answer to a national regulator in most markets and to state or provincial boards in two of the largest. Kenya's Gambling Regulatory Authority took over from the BCLB under the Gambling Control Act, 2025, in force since 26 August 2025.

Section 79 makes an unlicensed foreign online operator liable to a company fine of up to KSh 50 million.

Nigeria moved the other way. The Supreme Court ruled on 22 November 2024 that lottery and gaming belong to the states, so the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority licenses the brands you use in Lagos.

South Africa licenses bookmakers through provincial boards such as the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board, and the National Gambling Board states that South Africans cannot gamble with international sites.

Ghana's Gaming Commission, Uganda's NLGRB, the Gaming Board of Tanzania, Zambia's Betting Control and Licensing Board, Malawi's MAGLA, Botswana's Gambling Authority, Zimbabwe's Lotteries and Gaming Board and Cameroon's MINAT each publish or confirm a register. Namibia's Gambling Board held a bookmaker licensing workshop on 15 October 2026 with applications still under assessment.

Age limits follow the same local logic: 25 in Uganda, 21 in Botswana and Cameroon, 18 everywhere else on the board. Botswana passed an amendment in August 2026 to lower its limit to 18, but the change waits for a commencement date.

Online sports betting with mobile money, from M-Pesa to MoMo: map of the African betting markets covered

Online sports betting in Africa runs on the wallet in your SIM: M-Pesa in Kenya and Tanzania, MTN MoMo in Ghana, Uganda, Zambia and Cameroon, Airtel Money across East and Southern Africa, Orange Money in Cameroon, EcoCash in Zimbabwe. Nigeria adds OPay and PalmPay next to bank transfer and USSD.

The matrix lists the wallets punters in each country use and the ranked bookmakers whose cashier pages name them.

Where a cell is empty the bookmaker publishes cards, bank transfer or crypto only. BetWinner and 22Bet list M-Pesa and Airtel Money in Kenya, and both list MTN Mobile Money in Uganda. Safaricom caps an M-Pesa transaction at KSh 250,000 and a day at KSh 500,000, which is the ceiling for a Kenyan deposit whatever the bookmaker allows.

What sports betting in Africa costs in tax, country by country

What sports betting in Africa costs in tax, country by country, illustration

Sports betting in Africa is taxed at the punter's end in most of the markets on the board, and the rule decides what a winning slip pays. A KSh 1,000 stake at 3.20 returns KSh 3,200 in Kenya before the 5% withholding on the payout takes KSh 160, and the deposit itself cost KSh 50 in excise.

The same ticket in Uganda loses 15% of the profit, in Zimbabwe 25% of the winnings, and in Ghana nothing since 2 April 2025. Move the odds below and watch the countries reorder by what a winning slip leaves in the wallet.

Zambia replaced its withholding tax with a 5% levy on every deposit and withdrawal from 1 January 2026, so the charge lands on money in and money out. Cameroon's 1% transfer tax works the same way on a smaller scale. Each country page carries a payout calculator with that country's rule built in.

Best betting apps across Africa and the data they use

Best betting apps across Africa and the data they use: Namibia on a map of Africa with licence, payment and tax notes

The best betting apps for African networks keep working on a 2G signal and a small data bundle, which is why light sites and USSD still matter next to store downloads. 1xBet publishes Android and iOS builds plus a Lite mode in Nigeria.

22Bet, BetWinner, Melbet, Paripesa and Linebet publish both store builds in every market where they sell a bonus, and 1win publishes Android only.

In Ghana, Betika runs the *263# short code and Betway *711*1795#, so a slip can be placed from a feature phone, as the Ghana News Agency reported at launch. An APK downloaded from a bookmaker's own domain needs the Android setting for unknown sources. Match the download address to the domain printed on the regulator's register before installing.

African betting sites and the welcome bonus small print

African betting sites and the welcome bonus small print: payout slip for a Cameroon bet showing stake, odds and tax

African betting sites quote a headline match and hide the cost in three numbers: the rollover multiple, the minimum odds and the time limit. Melbet's Kenyan offer of 200% up to KSh 25,700 looks twice as rich as 22Bet's 100% up to KSh 19,000.

Melbet wants 8x turnover on accumulators priced 2.10 or higher within 30 days, while 22Bet wants 5x at 1.40 within 7 days.

A KSh 5,000 deposit therefore produces a KSh 10,000 Melbet bonus that needs KSh 80,000 of qualifying stakes, against a KSh 5,000 22Bet bonus that needs KSh 25,000.

  1. Read the minimum deposit: Paripesa Ghana starts at GH₵8, 1xBet Nigeria at ₦1,700, BetWinner Malawi at MK4,486.66.
  2. Multiply the bonus by the rollover, and by each part where the bonus is split: 1xBet's half at 5x and half at 30x in 1xGames.
  3. Check the odds floor and the leg count: three selections at 1.40 for most brands, 2.10 for Melbet, 1.70 on four legs for Mozzartbet Kenya.
  4. Note the clock: 7 days at 22Bet and 888starz, 30 days at BetWinner, Melbet, 1xBet and Paripesa.
  5. Count the deposit charge where one exists: 5% excise in Kenya, 5% levy in Zambia, 1% transfer tax in Cameroon.

Every country page has a welcome bonus calculator that runs these numbers from the published terms of the brands ranked there.

Betting sites in Africa and the odds they print

Betting sites in Africa and the odds they print: map of the African betting markets covered

Betting sites in Africa print decimal odds almost everywhere, with fractional prices surviving on South African horse racing pages. A decimal price of 2.50 returns 250 on a 100 stake, equals 6/4 in fractions and +150 in American form, and implies a 40% chance before the bookmaker's margin.

Use the converter below to read any price in the form you know.

Odds converter

Decimal odds are standard across African sportsbooks. Type a price to see the fractional and American forms and the chance the price implies.

Margins differ by league more than by country. A Premier League match priced 1.95 on both sides carries a 2.6% margin; a Zambia Super League match priced 1.85 and 1.85 carries 8.1%. Local leagues cost more to bet on, whichever bookmaker you choose.

Best sports betting sites for AFCON 2027 and the European season

Best sports betting sites for AFCON 2027 and the European season, illustration

The best sports betting sites for an East African punter in 2027 will be judged on one tournament. Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania co-host the Africa Cup of Nations after CAF accepted the joint Pamoja bid, which puts Harambee Stars, the Uganda Cranes and Taifa Stars on home soil.

The pages for Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania list the bookmakers licensed by the GRA, the NLGRB and the Gaming Board.

Week to week the slips are built on the Premier League, LaLiga and the Champions League. The local top flight sits underneath: the Kenyan Premier League, the Nigeria Premier Football League, the Ghana Premier League, the Betway Premiership in South Africa, the NBC Premier League in Tanzania and Elite One in Cameroon.

Every ranked bookmaker prices the European leagues, and the country pages name the ones that price the domestic derby.

Top betting sites and the licence check before your first deposit

Top betting sites and the licence check before your first deposit: Ghana on a map of Africa with licence, payment and tax notes

Top betting sites publish a licence number in the footer, and the number is only worth something when it appears on the regulator's own register. Kenya's GRA, Ghana's Gaming Commission, Uganda's NLGRB, Tanzania's Gaming Board, Malawi's MAGLA, Botswana's Gambling Authority and Lagos' LSLGA all publish lists online. The links sit in each country's legal section.

    1. Copy the licence number from the footer and find it on the regulator's register linked from the country page.
    2. Deposit the minimum first, through the wallet you will withdraw to, and withdraw a small amount before you stake more.
    3. Read the bonus parts in the comparison table and skip the offer if the rollover is too heavy for your usual stake size.
    4. Decide a monthly budget before the first slip and keep it outside the betting balance.
    5. Keep the regulator's complaint route: Kenya's GRA runs a toll-free line on 0800-723-770 and a Gambling Appeals Tribunal with a 14-day window.

International sites with an offshore licence are listed and labelled, because punters in Zimbabwe, Namibia and Botswana have few domestic online options. The label tells you which complaint route exists.

    Betting sites in Africa, answered

Betting sites in Africa, answered: payout slip for a South Africa bet showing stake, odds and tax

Which bookmakers rank highest across Africa right now?

1xBet, 22Bet, Melbet, BetWinner and Paripesa publish local-currency offers in most of the twelve markets, and 1xBet and 22Bet hold the widest set of local licences, from Kenya's GRA to Lagos' LSLGA. 1win leads several country lists with a four-deposit package. The right pick depends on your country's licence register and the wallet you use.

Is online sports betting legal across Africa?

Online sports betting is licensed in Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Cameroon and South Africa, each under its own act and regulator. Namibia is still licensing bookmakers under the 2018 Act, and Ethiopia revoked all sports betting licences after December 2025, so no bookmaker is ranked there.

Which African countries tax betting winnings?

Uganda withholds 15% of net winnings, Tanzania 15%, Malawi 15%, Zimbabwe 25% of gross winnings and Lagos State 5% of net winnings. Kenya charges 5% excise on deposits and 5% withholding on payouts, Zambia a 5% levy on deposits and withdrawals, Cameroon 1% on transfers. Ghana, Botswana and South Africa take nothing from a recreational punter's win.

Can I bet with M-Pesa or MTN MoMo at international betting sites?

Yes where the cashier lists the wallet. 22Bet and BetWinner name M-Pesa and Airtel Money in Kenya and MTN Mobile Money in Uganda; BetWinner names MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money in Zambia; Mozzartbet lists M-Pesa in Kenya. Brands that publish only cards and crypto for a country appear with a dash in the wallet matrix.

What is the minimum age for betting in African countries?

You must be 18 in Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Namibia and South Africa, 21 in Botswana and Cameroon, and 25 in Uganda under the Lotteries and Gaming Act, 2016. Botswana's 2026 amendment lowers its limit to 18 once the Minister appoints a commencement date.

How do I check whether a betting site is licensed in my country?

Take the licence number from the site footer to the regulator's register: GRA in Kenya, LSLGA in Lagos, the Gaming Commission in Ghana, NLGRB in Uganda, the Gaming Board in Tanzania, MAGLA in Malawi, the Gambling Authority in Botswana. Each country page links the register and prints the numbers the ranked brands publish, such as 1xBet Kenya's BK 0001232.

Why do welcome bonuses differ so much between countries for the same brand?

Caps follow the local currency and the local market: Melbet pays 200% up to KSh 25,700 in Kenya, 200% up to MK980,000 in Malawi and 200% up to R3,400 in South Africa, each with an 8x rollover at 2.10. 22Bet offers 100% everywhere but caps it at KSh 19,000, GH₵1,300 or TSh 300,000.
